07-Jan-2018 20:15

John Ward is a singer/songwriter and musician based in East Anglia. He turned to folk and acoustic music in the mid 1980s and, by 1988, had become a full-time songwriter and musician on the folk and roots music scene.

Since then, he has performed at folk clubs all over England and overseas.

John has supported acts such as Dick Gaughan, Davey Spillane, Carolyn Hester, Hank Wangford, John Otway, Dave Swarbrick and Alan Stivell. He has performed at many festivals including Broadstairs, Aldebrugh, Ely, Festival on the Moor, Saltburn, Ryedale and Cambridge.

All of his albums of original songs, written in a variety of styles, have received critical acclaim from reviewers and gig-goers alike.

John has been described as an energetic, passionate and spirited performer who successfully combines humour with thought-provoking songs. From his self-taught musical roots, John has earned a reputation as an excellent and versatile guitarist; his explosive bodhran playing has drawn much attention, and he sometimes includes harmonica, mandolin and banjo at live gigs. John’s warm and versatile style entertains and his repertoire, which is wide and varied, reflects his musical tastes and his enjoyment in playing in different styles. As well as his original compositions, John's set often includes traditional folk, light jazz and popular standards.

The John Ward Trio brings together John, Lynne Ward and Les Woodley whose powerful 3-part harmonies, blend to give a richer life to John’s original songs and to his traditional repertoire.

Accompanied by guitar, double bass, mandolin, harmonica, whistles and bodhran, and with the familiar, relaxed banter, stories and humour, the Trio delights folk club and festival audiences around the country. When the occasion demands, the Trio love to specialise in John’s East Coast heritage songs and traditional music of the land and the sea.

‘The best trad folk music set I have ever seen.’ Attila the Stockbroker (Brighton and Hove Albion supporter)
