Tony McManus at Croydon Folk Club

Tony McManus has come to be recognised throughout the world as the leading guitarist in Celtic Music, combining mesmeric techniques with a deep love of traditional music.

He was born in Paisley in 1965 and is now based in Canada,

From early childhood his twin obsessions of traditional music and acoustic guitar have worked together to produce a startlingly original approach to this ancient art.

After rapidly making his name as an unusually fluent and sensitive accompanist, he took the solo plunge with a triumphant main-stage debut on the final night of Glasgow’s inaugural Celtic Connections festival in 1994, supporting Capercaillie in front of a 2500-strong crowd.

His fiendishly dexterous, dazzlingly original playing draws on traditions from the entire Celtic diaspora – Scotland, Ireland, Brittany, Galicia, Asturias, Cape Breton, Quebec – along with still further-ranging flavours, such as jazz, classical and east European music. He has performed music by Eric Satie and JS Bach and has appeared with jazz fusion guitarist, John McLaughlin.

In addition to his solo albums, there have also been groundbreaking recordings with musicians as diverse as Scots fiddler Alasdair Fraser, bluegrass legend Dan Crary and French bassist Alain Genty.

To date, he has featured on over 50 albums by other artists, including Kate Rusby, Alison Brown, William Jackson, Brian McNeill, Liz Doherty, Colin Reid and Catriona Macdonald.
