The Deep Blue Sea - a play by Terence Rattigan

Join the Downsview Players this spring as they step into the emotionally tumultuous world of Hester Collyer in one of Rattigan’s most acclaimed productions: The Deep Blue Sea.

The story is a powerful account of lives blighted by love, loss, obsession and despair. The play opens with the attempted suicide of our lead, Hester - a woman who has deserted her husband for the charms of ex-fighter pilot, Freddie, in post-war London.

Hester also left her position in high society. Her bewildered husband, Sir William, still holds out hope that her emotions will settle and she will return to her ‘normal’ life. Like the sea itself, though, the currents and undertows of the water are all too real for Hester and we watch as she fights her own ever-turning tide of emotion.

Her lover, Freddie, should be her light and focus, but the shadows and memories of World War II overshadow his own life. He’s just not not able to give Hester the love and passion her heart desires.

Join us this May 10, 11 and 12 and watch as expectation and reality bring Hester’s world to the brink. Can she return?
