Ian Clarke Flute Festival

In January 2015, Whitgift is hosting an exciting one-day flute event led by Ian Clarke. We would likewarmly to invite your school’s flute ensembleto participate, and encourage you to respond as soon as possible as spaces are limited. Ideally all ensembles should comprise of 6 to 12 students. We also welcome individual applications for the day from senior school students.

During the day, each ensemble will be coached by Ian on a short, ready-prepared piece of their ownchoice. In the afternoon, there will be a coaching session with Ian and top flute specialist, Liz Goodwin, on two of Ian’s own works, ‘Walk Like This’ and ‘Zig Zag Zoo’, which should be prepared in advance if at all possible. Music is easily obtainable from ‘Just Flutes’ (Jonathan Myall Music) or through the links on Ian’s own website.

During this session, they will be taught about the extended flute techniques which are a prominent feature of Ian’s compositions. This part of the day is also open to young primary school flautists.

Free downloads of easy versions of parts for each piece can be found on the ‘Just Flutes’ website for beginner flautists. The day will culminate with a short concert featuring some of the pieces the ensembles have prepared throughout the day, as well as a performance given by Ian including compositions from his most recent CD, ‘Deep Blue’.

This recital is open to the parents/guardians of all those taking part in the day, and will commence at 4.30pm. Members of the general public are welcome to attend for a small donation made on the door.

There will be a stall from Jonathan Myall Music(Just Flutes) in residence during the day with a wide selection of flute, sheet music and CDs for purchase.

The day’s activities start at 9.30am and finish at 6.00pm. Food and drink will not be provided so please do bring food and drink with you for the day.
