CODA Go Wilde in the Park!

The Croydon Operatic and Dramatic Association ("CODA") are proud to present their second annual outdoor production in Croydon’s Wandle Park this summer - a sparkling new production of Oscar Wilde’s immortal comedy The Importance of Being Earnest, from 15 to 18 July.

The Importance of Being Earnest is Oscar Wilde’s best known play, and has been a firm audience favourite for more than a century. Two gentlemen-about-town, Algernon and Jack, have taken to bending the truth, in order to court the delectable Gwendolen and Cecily. But when their deceptions are uncovered, they must face the consequences – as well as the formidable Lady Bracknell!

Suitable for all ages, this witty production is the ideal treat for a summer's evening - with seating provided. The production is directed by David Sanders and assisted by Sarah Block, and stars Peter Davis as Algernon, Paul Grace as Jack, Rebecca Lyons as Cecily, Samantha Leitch as Gwendolen and Vicky Watkins as Lady Bracknell.

Wandle Park is amongst the oldest public open spaces in Croydon. Originally opening in 1890, the park was re-opened in November 2012 following a multi-million pound redevelopment, which enabled extensive restoration work to uncover the course of the river Wandle, and provide new facilities.

CODA was founded in 1943, and is Croydon's leading community theatre company, performing both musicals and plays, to a highly professional standard. In the last few years, CODA have performed acclaimed versions of Disney's Beauty and the Beast, The Graduate, Abigail's Party, Fame the Musical, West Side Story and Side by Side by Sondheim, alongside concerts and Old Time Music Halls. Most recently, CODA have produced hugely popular productions of The Railway Children and The Wind in the Willows at the Charles Cryer Theatre in Carshalton, and Witness for the Prosecution at the Braithwaite Hall at the Croydon Clocktower. Last year’s summer production of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night's Dream was CODA’s first outdoor production in Wandle Park, and was so exceptionally well-attended and received that the company were delighted to be asked back to perform again.

The Importance of Being Earnest runs from Wednesday 15 July to Saturday 18 July at the bandstand at Wandle Park, Croydon, with evening performances at 7:30pm and a matinee on Saturday 18 July at 2:30pm. Tickets are £10 for adults and £9 for concessions, and may be booked by calling the CODA box office on 07858 879019, or online (with a 50p booking fee) at www.codashows.co.uk.
